2018 Blog – Day 1

Trying New Things

Today’s the big day! Our counselors and dorm moms spent the weekend hard at work to welcome our 98 girls to Tech Trek Fresno on Sunday.

After a busy afternoon checking-in, settling into dorm rooms, and saying goodbye to families, we kicked off the week by introducing our theme via the TED talk “Teach girls bravery, not perfection.”

You see, our entire week is all about bravery. We want to empower the girls to try new things, to embrace imperfection, to be silly and have fun, to be a risk taker, to be okay with trial-and-error, and to go after big dreams.

We create plenty of opportunities for the girls to be brave in their new home away from home, especially through our tremendously fun group-bonding activities.

Speaking of which, we held relay races with jumbo tic-tac-toe, giant Connect 4, ladder toss, and the shoebox shake.

We also loved introducing the girls to our beloved and classic Dixie water cup challenge. Challenges come in all forms, so our activities encourage the girls to problem-solve and brainstorm to their maximum capacity. Our camp is a certainly a blend of creativity and ambition as well as nerdiness and silliness.

Just take a look at the girls working in teams to come up with creative and funky dorm group names and posters! What better way to end the first day than to devise team names like the “3 Hufflepuff Octo-Stripe Kangaroos” or “The Sisters of the Tetradecagon S’mores.”

You could say our girls are now ‘creatively brave’ (or bravely creative?).
